Frequently asked questions.

Here are just some of the questions we get asked on a daily basis.

No. The sensor itself usually lasts several sets of tyres, and in most cases all that needs replacing is the valve service kit, which is the seal, nut and core that sit between the sensor and the wheel. Those corrode, and reusing them is what causes a slow leak and a warning light a fortnight after new tyres. Sensors do eventually fail once the internal battery goes, normally somewhere between seven and ten years, and we will tell you which of the two you are dealing with rather than replacing the lot. See our TPMS check.

Every tyre we sell is road legal and tested, so a budget tyre is not an unsafe tyre. What you are paying for further up the range is wet braking distance, tread life and noise, and whether that is worth it depends entirely on your mileage and the roads you use. Someone doing motorway miles on the A483 every day gets their money back from a premium tyre. Someone doing school runs round Gwersyllt and Llay often does not. Tell us how you actually drive and we will point you at the right one rather than the dearest. Have a look at the current offers too, as there is cashback running on several brands.

Not usually. We carry premium, mid range and budget stock at Llay across cars, vans and 4x4s, and what is not on the shelf we order in, often arriving the same day. That includes low profile and performance fitments, run flats and the larger van and light commercial sizes. Send us the size off the sidewall, or the registration through the tyre finder, and we will confirm what we can get and when before you commit to a trip anywhere.

Yes. Plenty of people on the estate walk round, leave the keys with us and collect the car at the end of the day, and if you are only having a couple of tyres or a puncture sorted you are usually looking at well under an hour, so waiting on site is perfectly doable too. The branch is open 8:00 to 5:30 Monday to Friday and 8:00 to 1:00 on Saturday. Ring 01978 853779 or book online if you want a time held.

A wobble or vibration that appears at a certain speed and eases off either side of it is almost always wheel balance, often from a weight that has been thrown off at a pothole. A car that pulls to one side, or sits with the steering wheel off centre while going straight, is alignment. Uneven wear on one edge of a tyre points to alignment as well. We can check both at Llay in the same visit rather than guessing. See wheel balancing and wheel alignment.

The legal minimum in the UK is 1.6mm across the central three quarters of the tyre and all the way round, and you can be fined up to £2,500 with three penalty points per tyre below that. In practice wet braking falls away noticeably under 3mm, so that is the point we would start planning rather than panicking. If you come in at 4mm we will say so and tell you to come back in a few months. If you have caught a cord or a bulge in a sidewall, we will tell you that too and why it cannot wait.

Often, yes, and it is not an upsell. Permanent four wheel drive systems measure the speed of each wheel, and a new tyre has a bigger rolling circumference than a part worn one, so mixing them makes the differential or the centre coupling work constantly. Some manufacturers will not accept more than a couple of millimetres difference across the axles. If your other three are still deep and the same make and pattern, we will tell you that one or two is fine. Tell us the model when you ring and we will check what it needs. See 4×4 tyres.

Possibly. Tread depth is only half the story, and on low mileage cars, second cars and vehicles that sit on a drive through the winter it is age that gets them first. Rubber hardens and the sidewalls start to craze, so grip in the wet drops well before the tread runs out. Find the four digit code on the sidewall, so 3221 means week 32 of 2021. Anything past five years is worth a proper look and anything near ten should be replaced whatever the tread says. Bring it in for a tyre safety check and we will give you an honest answer.

They make more sense here than they do down in the town. The ground rises quickly out toward Minera, Brymbo, Bwlchgwyn and the Llandegla moors, and those roads hold ice and get gritted later than the main routes, so a standard summer tyre on a frosty morning is doing you no favours below about seven degrees. If you commute over the tops every day, winter tyres are the right call. If you mostly stay low and just want the cold months covered, all season rubber is usually the sensible middle ground. Compare winter tyres and all season tyres.

Probably, if they are more than five years old. Caravan and motorhome tyres usually fail on age rather than tread, because they sit still for months, take the full weight on one axle and develop sidewall cracking long before the tread wears out. Check the four digit DOT code on the sidewall for the week and year they were made. We can look them over at Llay before you set off over the Horseshoe Pass or down the A5 through Llangollen, and fit the correct load rated replacements if they need doing. See caravan tyres.

Yes, and a lot of our Wrexham fitting is done exactly like that. Llay Industrial Estate is on our doorstep, and we regularly work the car parks on Wrexham Industrial Estate and around the Broughton and Deeside plants, where shift patterns make a normal garage appointment almost impossible. Leave the keys with someone on site, make sure we can get to all four wheels, and leave the locking wheel nut key in the glovebox, because that is the one thing that stops the job dead. We will ring you before anything gets decided.

We do. The land south and east of Wrexham toward Marchwiel, Bangor-on-Dee, Holt and Isycoed keeps us busy with agricultural work, and a tractor or telehandler stuck in a yard mid-season is not something that waits until next week. We can fit on the farm rather than expecting you to bring the machine in, and we handle trailer and implement tyres as well as the drive tyres. Ring the branch with the size off the sidewall and what the machine is doing day to day. See agricultural tyres.

Yes. The 24 hour callout number is 07958 530519 and it is answered outside branch hours, including early starts, evenings and weekends. Tell us the junction or the nearest village, whether you are on the hard shoulder or somewhere safer, and the tyre size off the sidewall if you can reach it safely. We load the likely tyre before setting off, which is why drivers on the A483, the A5156 and the A541 Mold Road often have someone with them inside the hour. More on emergency tyre fitting.

Yes. Rossett, Marford, Gresford, Trevalyn, Lavister, Dodleston, Poulton, Higher Kinnerton, Bretton, Broughton and Balderton are all inside our normal patch from Llay, along with Hope, Caergwrle, Penyffordd and Cefn-y-bedd on the Flintshire side. Plenty of people out that way default to driving into Chester for tyres when we are closer and can usually see them the same day. Ring 01978 853779 with your postcode and we will tell you straight whether the van comes to you or it is quicker to pop up to Llay. See mobile tyre fitting.

No, and it is worth knowing before you set off. We are at Unit 1 SMD Court on Miners Road, on Llay Industrial Estate, about four miles north of the town centre at LL12 0PJ. Coming off the A483, the Gresford and Rossett junctions are the easiest way in. Put the postcode in your sat nav rather than searching “Wrexham”, and remember there are other units on Miners Road, so look for the DMH signage on SMD Court. Directions and contact details are on our contact page.
